I hear it constantly at the doors. People are splitting pills to make a prescription last, skipping a checkup because the copay is out of reach, and hoping the next emergency holds off until payday. Health care in Montana costs too much, and families are the ones absorbing it.

The state has more power here than people think. Protecting Medicaid expansion is the big one. It keeps working Montanans covered, keeps our rural hospitals and clinics open, and draws down federal dollars we have already paid for. When a small-town clinic closes, everyone in that community loses their care, so keeping those doors open is common sense.

There is more we can do. We can bring transparency to health care pricing so a family knows what something costs before the bill arrives. We can push for honest competition that brings prices down. And we can support the rural providers who keep care close to home in a state this size.

This is a place where a lot of us agree once we set the labels aside. Keeping a local hospital open, keeping care affordable for a working family, respecting the responsibility each of us has to look after our own health. Those are shared goals.

Care close to home, at a price a family can afford. That is the Montana way, and it is worth fighting for.
